What Is Broad-Spectrum CBD?

Broad-spectrum CBD is a hemp extract that has been processed to remove delta-9 THC while retaining other naturally occurring cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, CBC, etc.), terpenes, and flavonoids. It is designed to capture the potential benefits of the entourage effect without the presence of THC.

Manufacturing Process

Producing broad-spectrum extract typically involves starting with a full-spectrum extract and then using one of several THC remediation techniques:

  • Chromatography: Selectively separates and removes THC
  • Crystallization: Allows THC to crystallize separately from other compounds
  • Distillation: Fractionates cannabinoids by boiling point; THC can be targeted and removed

Regulatory Position

Broad-spectrum CBD occupies a favorable middle ground for manufacturers:

  • Reduced drug-testing risk compared to full-spectrum (THC should be non-detectable)
  • Reduced "hot product" risk
  • Retains terpene profile for consumer appeal and potential entourage effect
  • Still subject to FDA's general position that CBD in food or dietary supplements requires regulatory approval

"Non-Detectable" vs. "THC-Free"

Manufacturers must be careful with labeling claims. "Non-detectable" THC means below the limit of quantification for the testing method used — not necessarily zero. "THC-free" claims require rigorous substantiation. The FTC has taken action against companies making unsupported CBD health or content claims.
