Full-Spectrum CBD
Definition
A hemp extract containing CBD along with the full range of naturally occurring cannabinoids, including trace amounts of delta-9 THC (up to 0.3%), terpenes, and flavonoids.
What Is Full-Spectrum CBD?
Full-spectrum CBD refers to hemp-derived extracts that preserve the plant's complete cannabinoid profile, including cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), and trace amounts of delta-9 THC (at or below the 0.3% federal threshold), as well as terpenes and flavonoids naturally present in the hemp plant.
The 0.3% THC Risk
While federally compliant hemp-derived products must contain no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC, the presence of any THC creates several compliance risks:
- Drug testing: Consumers may accumulate enough THC from regular full-spectrum use to trigger a positive drug test
- State law: Some states have set lower THC thresholds or require zero THC in consumer products
- Labeling: Manufacturers must accurately reflect THC content, requiring robust lot-by-lot testing
- "Hot" product risk: Inconsistent extraction can push full-spectrum products above 0.3% delta-9 THC
Hot CBD
When hemp-derived CBD products — typically full-spectrum extracts — test above 0.3% delta-9 THC, they are colloquially called "hot" and must be destroyed or remediated under federal hemp program rules. This is a significant financial risk for manufacturers without precise extraction controls.
The Entourage Effect
Advocates argue that full-spectrum extracts produce a superior therapeutic effect due to the synergistic interaction of multiple cannabinoids and terpenes. Clinical research supporting the entourage effect is ongoing but not yet definitive in FDA's view.
