What Is HHC?

Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) is a hydrogenated derivative of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It is produced by a hydrogenation process — adding hydrogen atoms to THC's double bond — similar to how vegetable oil is converted into margarine. The result is a more stable compound with a longer shelf life than conventional THC.

Hemp-Derived vs. Cannabis-Derived

Commercially available HHC is typically produced by hydrogenating CBD extracted from hemp, making it a hemp-derived cannabinoid from a manufacturing standpoint. This positioning has allowed HHC manufacturers to argue the product is legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, following the same logic used by delta-8 THC producers.

Federal Legal Status

HHC's federal status is arguably more contested than delta-8 THC's. Because HHC's molecular structure differs from delta-9 THC, some argue it is not covered by the CSA's THC scheduling language. The DEA has not issued explicit guidance on HHC. However, the agency's position that "synthetically derived" THC analogs are Schedule I likely extends to HHC under the Federal Analogue Act.

Psychoactive Effects

Users report HHC produces effects similar to delta-9 THC, though typically described as milder. Unlike delta-8 or delta-9 THC, HHC may not show up on standard immunoassay drug tests because its metabolites are structurally distinct — a feature actively marketed to consumers, though not scientifically confirmed for all testing protocols.

State Restrictions

States that have banned delta-8 THC or enacted broad "intoxicating hemp" restrictions generally cover HHC as well, particularly those using "synthetic cannabinoid" or "THC analog" language.
